“True Grit” is the Coen Brothers’ most heroic, straight forward tale, and for me their most satisfying. Where the original “True Grit” took liberties with the book (which I was not aware of previously), the Coens’ remain true to the cannon, including the first person narrative of Mattie Ross—this time with Hailee Steinfeld reprising Kim Darby’s role. Newcomer 14 year-old Steinfeld is amazing. Matt Damon solidly plays Texas Ranger LaBoeuf—the Glenn Campbell role.

The Coens’ envision “True Grit” as stark and barren existential treatise. Paradoxically, “True Grit” is rock solid with stellar performances, but not awesome. The acting was stiff and I felt the lines were awkward and unrealistic for the times. The cast just did not work well together and were simply reading their lines and had no feeling or expression in the presentation.

Many people will be turned off by the straightforwardness of the storytelling in True Grit. I have already heard complaints that the film lacks poignancy. My extremely high expectations were surpassed. The movie actually surprised all the hype I had, what an incredible film. Overall, it was an amazing cinematic experience that truly transports the viewer to a very real and fully realized time and space that crackles with fire and true grit.

The film is campy, the story is corny, the villain is wasted and Seth Rogen wrote the script. This movie could have been written more seriously and be on the same map as a Christopher Nolan’s Batman film; I saw a screening of this recently, and walked in with zero expectations, and walked out having laughed throughout the movie and REALLY enjoyed the action and chemistry between Rogen and Jay Chou.

It moves quick, and the dialogue is snappy and funny, the fight scenes are good, and the CGI tends not to be obvious. Seth Rogan plays Seth Rogan, he’s not Al Hodge or Van Williams, and I accepted this from the start. BrittReid has had a troubled relationship with his dad ever since he was a young one. Now grown up and an heir to his dad’s newspaper The Daily Sentinel, he always thought his dad was a selfish jerk, and his dad being found dead from a supposed bee sting doesn’t make it better…Just go in with a open mind, let loose of all your anxiety, and just watch the movie and accept it for what it is.

The film is visually entertaining for what it is. The movie isn’t perfect, I didn’t feel Cameron Diaz added anything to the movie expect being “the hot girl” to create a rift between guys.  I saw the 3D version and there were very few sequences where the 3D effects was worth the extra price of admission. I recommend saving your money and watch the 2D version instead. Rated PG-13 for violence and sexual references. Keep the 10 and under kids home.
